چکیده

1. Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro (RJ) Brasil. 2. Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre, Porto Alegre (RS) Brasil. A 34-year-old female patient presented to the outpatient clinic with complaints of fever, cough, and weight loss (8 kg in the last 3 months). She had a history of having undergone resection of a uterine adenocarcinoma 2 years prior. A chest CT showed branching opacities, which characterize the tree-in-bud (TIB) pattern, in the middle lobe and the left lower lobe, as well as left lung volume reduction and consolidation with cavitation in the lingula (Figure 1). The TIB pattern represents centrilobular branching opacities, most pronounced in the lung periphery, resembling the budding of certain plants. Although, in most cases, the TIB pattern represents filling of bronchioles with mucus, pus, blood, or other materials, with or without dilatation, it may also be related to peribronchovascular connective tissue thickening or filling and dilatation of pulmonary arterioles. Although the TIB pattern is more commonly observed in bronchiolar infections (bronchopneumonia, infectious bronchiolitis, and endobronchial dissemination of tuberculosis), it has a broader differential diagnosis that includes bacterial infections, fungal infections (allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis), or viral infections; as well as bronchiectasis; idiopathic conditions (obliterative bronchiolitis and panbronchiolitis) or congenital conditions (cystic fibrosis); aspiration or inhalation of foreign material; and peripheral pulmonary vascular disease, especially due to endovascular metastatic spread of certain tumors. In our patient, the main differential diagnosis was between pulmonary tuberculosis and endovascular metastatic spread of the previously resected uterine tumor (neoplastic embolism).

Actinobacillus ureae: an unusual cause of tree-in-bud pattern in a case of pneumonia on lung computed tomographic scan—first clinical case report and review of the literature from India

A 62-year-old man with asthma sought care for intermittent fever, cough with expectoration, breathlessness and orthopnoea with grunting. Computed tomography revealed clusters of centrilobular nodules on both sides with a tree-in-bud appearance and mild diffuse bronchial wall thickening. Sputum sample grew pure colonies of Actinobacillus ureae which was confirmed by MALDI-TOF and 16SrRNA gene se...

"Tree in bud" attributable to organising pneumonia.

To cite: Bots EMT, den Bakker MA, Wijsenbeek MS, et al. Thorax 2013;68:399– 400. A 19-year-old man presented with dyspnoea, a non-productive cough and subfebrile temperature. Chest radiography showed a diffuse nodular pattern and a pneumomediastinum. HR-CT revealed a diffuse ‘tree in bud’ pattern (figure 1). An infectious bronchiolitis was suspected. Despite treatment with moxifloxacin he devel...

High-resolution computed tomography findings of pulmonary tuberculosis in lung transplant recipients

OBJECTIVE Respiratory infections constitute a major cause of morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplant recipients. The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis is high among such patients. On imaging, tuberculosis has various presentations. Greater understanding of those presentations could reduce the impact of the disease by facilitating early diagnosis. Therefore, we attempted to describe ...

Modulation of bud survival in Populus nigra sprouts in response to water stress-induced embolism.

Understanding drought tolerance mechanisms requires knowledge about the induced weakness that leads to tree death. Bud survival is vital to sustain tree growth across seasons. We hypothesized that the hydraulic connection of the bud to stem xylem structures was critical for its survival. During an artificial drastic water stress, we carried out a census of bud metabolic activity of young Populu...

Changes of free polyamines in the leaves and stems of ‘Kinnow’ mandarin tree as affected by alternate bearing

In order to investigate the seasonal changes and the possible role of the free polyamines in the leaves and stems on the alternate bearing habit of the ‘Kinnow’ mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) trees, a comparative study was conducted to analyze the levels of free polyamines  (putrescine, spermidine and spermine) in the leaves and stems tissues of “on” and &ldquo...
